Newcastle 2nd XI vs Benwell Hill (Home)
Having
won the umpteenth toss Ncl 2nd XI decided to have a bat first on a nice
track at Jesmond, causing conflicting opinions, which the captain takes
full responsibility of having been slated for this decision in the bar
afterwards. Few team changes saw Michael Cowans appearing for us for the
first time and the reliable Danny "I chinned wor kid" Carr turning
out.
A great start was provided by village run machine Jon hurfurd (who previously
averaged 2.3333r) and rowdy "sconed by his bro before the match"
Carr. They put on 93 for the first wicket, before both lost their wicket
in quick succession. Then followed a disappointing middle order collapsage,
before "chaz me up" Charlie Roe and reliable Nick "Anil
Kumble" Humble steadied the ship with a valuable partnership of 30+
in the last few overs to get us to 194-9 from our 55. The highlight of
the inning was Chaz and his mixed message from the pavilion as to whether
we declare with 1 over to go - back and forth like a yoyo!
When
we took to the field (half of our team sporting new sunglasses courtesy
of willallen.com), a steady start was made by the Hill openers until the
introduction of Nicky Humble and Shaun "could score a run for toffee"
Collins came into the attack, with Nick removing their slow left hander.
Shaun then removed the majority of the "batsmen" (used in the
loosest of terms), finishing with the fine figures of 11-2-24-4, abley
supported by Robson (14-2-39-2) and Humble (15-2-45-2). Shaun spat all
dummies and toys out when the skipper took him off after 7 overs. This
pleased everyone no amounts, and induced a wayward throw for the irate
Collins from mid off causing over throws! We all thought he was gonna
take his ball and cry to mammy!
Another game we deserved to win, but we have the problem of bowling teams
out. That`s now 3 teams we have had 8 or 9 down and then held on to the
draw!
Newcastle 1st XI vs Benwell Hill (Away)
Not much good news to report to Newcastle CC supporters from this fixture.
Stand in captain Matty Hynd lost the toss and things when down hill therafer.
Newcastle lost the filthy Aussie early doors and he was closely followed
by the rest of the top order leaving Newcastle 18 for 4. Things started
to look better after the youthful middle order pairing of Keith Porter
& Ken "the legend" Pearson added 60 for the 5th wicket.
However Newcastle soon collapsed after Kenny P chased a wide one and was
out for 19, Ports (21) and the rest of the team soon followed and Newcastle
where all out for a miserable 97. Knowing we had to take early wickets
things got off to a bad start when filthy dropped their opener off Angry.
The chat was that filthy was still thinking about his victory in his fishing
tournament the day earlier. The only highlights of a poor day where a
dubious wicket, an 11 ball over from the Mad Lynds Dog & one wicket
for Jonny B. The Hill eventually won by 8 wkts and the light on the horizon
was the return of Ritzy & perhaps even Glutomus maximus.
A poor start to the 2nd half of the campaign, however we will hopefully
rectify this with this weekends fixture against Norton & a hefty drinking
session afterwards!
