Newcastle 1st XI vs Tynemouth (Away)

Ritzy raises his bat for an excellent hundredOn a blustery day, Newcastle, minus gluteus max or min, won the toss and opted to insert the opposition. Having arrived early the team underwent a strenuous warm-up routine, four members even being seen to jog a gentle lap around the ground. However Keith 'fat lip' Brown was disappointed by the lack of walls into which to smash throw downs.

The Tynemouth opening batters started briskly on a slow and lifeless pitch. On reaching his fifty Wayne 'i spell TEAM with a capital I' Falla was undone by the flight and guile of Johnny B, lobbing an attempt to hit over the top to Angry 'the lads are going to give me dog's abuse if I drop this' Alex Brown. Of course he pouched the chance with ease, and also showed off his athleticism in taking a blinding catch in the deep during the final few overs of the Tynemouth innings. Tynemouth, adopting their renowned sail to the wind approach, batted the full 65 overs for 264 runs. The Newcastle bowlers stuck to their task well with the MadDog Lindsey and 'veteran' Keith Brown snaring two wickets apiece.

Angry departs, a Villager arrives! In reply, Newcastle were in early trouble at 30-3, Scotty Kay snicking a watermelon to 1st slip, Jim Bob, playing a shot this week but still failing to make contact with the ball, was castled, and Hyndo nicked an attempted hook into his helmet and was caught in the slips. A hyperactive Ritzy and somewhat more sedate Big Will set about re-building the Newcastle innings, going from strength to strength in a partnership of over a hundred, Ritzy calling for the Mojaves in a vanity bid mid-innings. Will was finally out to a juicy full toss for a well constructed 44, but Ritzy, now sporting yellow lenses, moved swiftly on to a fluent century, but was dismissed shortly after in a bid to up the scoring rate. Newcastle were now perilously poised at 180-7, and the somewhat unpredictable pairing of Bailey and Brown were instructed to see out the draw. They duly thrashed at the ball in gay abandon, before False Teeth skied one to cover, but the dependable (!?) Lindsey saw out the match with Johnny B who notched another red inker for 26 not out.
