Newcastle 1st XI vs South Northumberland (Home)
In
contrast to the dull events on the field at Phili Saturday, the Bank Holiday
fixture against South Northumberland proved to be an exciting affair!
Played over the full 120 overs, in bright sunshine and in front of a reasonably
sized crowd, South North by one wicket, scrambling the winning run from
the last ball of the last over of the day.
Newcastle batted first and were off to a fine start with Scotty Kay stroking
a quick fire 57 before being triggered LBW playing an ambitious and some
might say ill-advised reverse-sweep. Matty Hynd also returned to form
nurdling a fine 73 and Kingers compiled a promising 25 in his first team
debut. Newcastle were saved from making a decision about a suitable declaration
and were bowled out for 217 in the 64th over.
In response East-West were well positioned at tea, having scored 70 runs
for the loss of one wicket. After the break Newcastle were looking down
the barrel with the opposition on 150-3. Drastic times call for drastic
measures and captain Ritz called for the services of the Robson at one
end and a return for the younger of the Bailey twins at the other. Uncomplicated
'straight and full' bowling built up the pressure as south-west lost direction
as wickets fell. It all went down to the final over with seven runs required
by the opposition. Dot-one-one-four-dot-one! Very tense, very enjoyable,
and even in defeat very well done to the Newcastle lads, especially Andy
Robson and James Bailey who bowled their socks off! Now come on the Naaarth,
make sure you beat the Hill to the title!
