Newcastle 1st XI vs Tynemouth (Away)
After overnight rain, Tynemouth won the toss and elected to bat. A pumped
up Newcastle team, sporting new shirts, without three of the regular opening
batsmen/bowlers, started in the best possible fashion, Mad Dog Lindsey
cart-wheeling the tfc Tynemouth opener's middle stump first ball. Captain
for the day, Ryan, then produced a fine turn and throw from mid off for
a run out. A great start for Newcastle, Lindsey bowling with excellent
pace and control causing problems for the batters. However, after the
hardness of the ball was lost, the dead Tynemouth pitch took it's hold
on the match, forcing attrition from the batsmen and containment from
the bowlers. Tynemouth batted through their full allotment of 65 overs
for 210 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, Paul Lindsey returning the fine
figures of 5-72.

In
reply, Newcastle again got off to a solid start in pursuit of the Tynemouth
target, Ryno and Nick-Slick batting without being troubled by the Tynemouth
bowling. However, once again runs were only being scored at a little over
2 runs per over and although wickets were in hand, too much was left for
the Tynemouth target to be threatened in the 55 overs remaining. That
said, Ryan's first hundred for Newcastle was a very fine innings, punishing
anything loose with a resounding crack from his (now broken!) bat. With
30 runs needed from the last 5 overs for a winning draw, Ryan put his
foot on the accelerator and launched a number of huge sixes over the rugby
shed at the bottom end, securing that Newcastle left the game with another
winning draw. However, after missing out on potential victories over Gateshead
Fell, Stockton, and now Tynemouth thought should be given to the first
25 overs when chasing a target that the Newcastle team would expect to
overhaul.
